Author, lecturer, comedian and sociologist Dr. Bertice Berry brought a positive attitude and exceptional humor to the NEW Leadership Summit 2012 offering ways attendees could "Profit from Your Life Experiences."
"You all do 10,000 things and never think anything of it," said Berry, addressing the common desire to master work/life balance. "When everything at home is perfect, work falls apart. When everything at work is perfect, home falls apart. That's the balance. Get over it."
The engaging speaker recounted real-life experiences that have shaped her outlook, including her path from unlikely college student to Ph.D. recipient, health issues that inspire her to be stronger and a backed-up sewage system that stirred the ire of an inconvenienced neighbor. For Berry (pictured below), life experiences are not meant to ultimately wound or hinder, they urge growth.
Assessing experiences and finding a purpose is integral to healthy development, she said. "You can't just ask about it," Berry said. "You have to get up and do something about it."
People who seek experiences that offer personal growth and strong relationships make the world a better place, she said, adding that women are capable of effecting tremendous change.
"We've got to start loving one another and working together," Berry said. "We need each other. We need to come together as sisters. We have to make sure that even in the future, we are going to be okay."
