Nearly 30 senior industry executives gathered at The Clorox Company headquarters in Oakland, Calif., to learn more about corporate board service and creating a legacy during a day-long event presented by the Network of Executive Women on Jan. 30, 2013.

Offering their insights on board service during a morning presentation were James White, CEO of Jamba Juice; Caroline Nahas, managing director, Southern California and senior client partner, Board and CEO Services Practice at Korn/Ferry International; Laura Stein, senior vice president and general counsel for The Clorox Company. Maureen McGurl, founder and president, Sutton Place HR Consulting Group, moderated the discussion.

White, who serves as chairman of Jamba Juice as well as on the boards of Hillshire Brands Inc. and Daymon Worldwide Inc., advised executives interested in board service to build a robust network of key contacts in their specific business area, in their industry and beyond. "Maintain these connections,” he said. "They can be the key for future placement.”

While financial literacy is a key trait needed for board service, operational experience -- how to run the business -- is critical as well. Focus on capabilities and skills you may need to broaden, Stein advised. "Understand how you can showcase your areas of expertise,” she said, adding it is smart to shadow someone on a board to gain insight on what board service looks like.”

Nahas suggested executives look for board service at nonprofit organizations first. "Be strategic, not only passionate,” she said. "Get advice from someone who has been on the board. Have them look at your background and help you determine what you might be lacking. Make sure people know you are interested.”

During an afternoon session, Marie Quintana, president and CEO of The Quintana Group, moderated a panel discussion on creating and living a legacy. Panelists included Christy Consler, senior vice president, human resources and corporate sustainability for Jamba Juice; Diane Dietz, executive vice president and CMO for Safeway Inc.; Audrey Goins Brichi, manager, strategy, planning and coordination for downstream technology and services procurement at Chevron Corporation; and Rhonda Ramlo, vice president, partnership-strategy and growth for The Clorox Company.
