A sold-out crowd of more than 500 Network of Executive Women members were motivated by bestselling author Fawn Germer and a panel of executives to achieve and lead at the NEW Northern California spring event, April 12, 2013 at the Blackhawk Museum in Danville, Calif.

Everyone can achieve beyond their perceived limits if she sets aside self-esteem issues and tones down negativity, Germer said. "There is no special success DNA [required to be a leader.]”

Joining the Pulitzer Prize-nominated Germer were Amy Hoopes, chief marketing officer and executive vice president of global sales, Wente Vineyards; Teri Llach, chief marketing officer, Blackhawk Network, a subsidiary of Safeway Inc.; and Karen Luey, executive vice president and chief financial and administrative officer of Jamba Juice Company.

"Have courageous conversations with the right people,” Hoopes advised.

And remember, Luey said, "Business is business; it's not personal."

Asked "What would you have liked to have learned early on in your career?”, Llach said, "Never ever take credit for your work and always support your teams.”

"Control the controllables,” Hoopes advised.  "Always build a great team around you,” Luey offered.

After the panel discussion, Jenna Wainaina of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., said NEW events "have opened my eyes to how many women are in retail, not just at Wal-Mart, but in the bigger scope of things.  I also enjoy bringing people from my team so that they can see a bigger network of women and be exposed to other views and ways of doing things.”

Among the many organizations sending delegations to the event were Annie’s Inc., Campbell Soup Company, Chevron Corporation, The Clorox Company, Clif Bar & Company, ConAgra Foods, Coupons.com Inc., Del Monte Foods, E & J Gallo Winery, G3 Enterprises Inc., Ghirardelli Chocolate Company, H.J. Heinz Company, Jamba Juice Company, Kellogg Company, Kraft Foods Group Inc., Mezzetta, Mondelēz International, Nielsen, PepsiCo Inc., Procter & Gamble, PureRed, Ross Stores Inc., Sears Holdings Corporation, Safeway Inc., Unilever and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
