More than 500 Network of Executive Women members and supporters learned to build comfortable, productive workplace relationships at the NEW Twin Cities spring networking event, May 14, 2013, in Bloomington, Minn.

Rachael Vegas, vice president, merchandise manager, snacks, beverages, pet care and candy for Target Corporation, and Dean Hyers and Pete Machalek, performance facilitators and presentation experts from SagePresence, offered real-world networking tips. Among the experts’ advice: Focus the conversation on others and ask questions to find out more about their workplace challenges.

The panelists urged attendees to show their value while networking by talking about the people they have helped. Members also learned the value of "helping upward,” providing conversation that moves beyond mere chat, when a superior can "get something” out of the interaction.

"What I found most refreshing is that Rachael is seen as an exceptional networker, but she dreads such events and then gets energized once she is there,” said NEW Twin Cities Co-Secretary Vicki Schwartz, vice president, customer supply services, for Schwan's Consumer Brands. "This validated my feelings [about networking] — a love/hate relationship.”

The morning event began with a special how-to session led by Julie Melbye, director, CPG at SkyWater Search Partners, who shared networking tips and engaged attendees in practice activities.

"I thought this was the best NEW event I have attended,” said Tammy Moore, national customer manager for Kraft Foods Group Inc. "I walked away with a better understanding of tips I could put into action right away.”

Attendees received a copy of Winning Presence for Networking: Build Professional Relationships Everywhere You Go, authored by Machalek.

Among the companies sending delegations to the event were 3M, Acosta Sales & Marketing, The Coca-Cola Company, General Mills Inc., Hormel Foods Corporation, Kellogg Company, Kraft Foods Group Inc., Lawrence Merchandising Services, MOM Brands, Mondelēz International Inc., Procter & Gamble, Schwan’s Consumer Brands Inc., SUPERVALU Inc. and Target Corporation.
