Anne-Marie Slaughter, the former State Department official who launched a global debate on work/family balance, will be the keynote speaker at the Network of Executive Women Leadership Summit,Oct. 21-23. More than 900 executives and emerging leaders from the retail and consumer goods industry are expected to attend the three-day Summit at the Westin Bonaventure in downtown Los Angeles.

Slaughter, a foreign policy expert and Princeton professor, wrote the widely discussed article, "Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” in The Atlantic magazine last year. After a two-year stint as director of policy planning for the U.S. State Department, Slaughter turned down a possible promotion to return home and help parent her two teenage sons. Her article addresses "the myth of work/life balance" and makes the case for a more flexible and family-friendly workplace. Her keynote address will address these issues as she draws on her experiences as a senior State Department official, university professor and mother.

Slaughter is the Bert G. Kerstetter '66 university professor of politics and international affairs at Princeton University. In September she will become president of the New America Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute that invests in new thinkers and new ideas to address the next generation of challenges facing the United States.

Upon leaving the State Department, Slaughter received the Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor conferred by the State Department, for her work leading the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review. She also received a Meritorious Honor Award from the U.S. Agency for International Development and a Joint Civilian Service Commendation Award from the Supreme Allied Commander for Europe.

The NEW Leadership Summit will feature three keynote speakers; three workshop tracks targeting emerging leaders, mid-level leaders and senior executives; bonus NEW Leadership Academy sessions; and special networking events, including the NEW Celebrating Excellence awards gala and banquet; the annual Summit Luncheon; plus breakfast and refreshment breaks.
