More than 100 Network of Executive Women members learned valuable leadership strategies at the NEW Mid-Atlantic spring networking event, June 19, 2013, at the Sheraton Silver Spring Hotel in Silver Spring, Md.

Retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Becky Halstead, founder of Steadfast Leadership LLC, shared personal insights on how best to train and develop a high-performing, complex and diverse team.

Building on the event’s core message, "The first person to lead is you,” Halstead emphasized self-awareness as an asset to leadership. "The only thing you can control in life is your attitude,” Halstead said.

Recognizing the effectiveness of team members, rather than the overall efficiency of the team, is another key leadership skill. You "need to keep faces on the data,” Halstead said, noting that encouraging others can infuse them with energy.

Maintaining openness, and a willingness to learn, is necessary. "Even a lousy day will teach you something,” she noted,

Halstead, who served 27 years in the U.S. Army, told NEW members "the best of you is ahead of you — but you need to lead yourself there.”

Several organizations donated gift baskets for the event: EMD Sales, Harris Teeter, McCormick & Company Inc., Staples, which also donated a tablet, and Giant Foods, which also contributed several gift cards.

Companies sending large delegations to the event included Acosta Sales & Marketing, Altria, McCormick & Company Inc. and Safeway Inc.

Ahold USA colleagues Billye Pounds, Margaret Davis, Felis Andrade
and Jeanine Jones networked at the NEW Mid-Atlantic spring event.
