More than 230 Network members honed their communication and relationship-building skills at the NEW Southern California fall event at the Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa in Huntington Beach, Sept. 25, 2013.

Executive leadership coach Connie Podesta separated the audience into four personality types ― squares, circles, triangles and squiggles. "Men and women communicate very differently [too],” she said.

Successful communication depends on perspective, Podesta explained, noting "sales is getting someone else on board. Adapting your communication style to what someone else will respond to is just smart business."

Podesta cautioned NEW members, saying, "We’re attracted to people because of our weaknesses. They have something we don’t. But as a result, we wind up in relationships with people we then try to change.”

The event also celebrated outstanding leadership, honoring NEW Southern California Treasurer Victoria Francis of ConAgra Foods with the NEW Southern California Regional Leader of the Year award.

Among the organizations sending delegations to the event were Acosta Sales & Marketing, Brown-Forman, Bristol Farms, Food 4 Less, Frito-Lay, Mondelēz International, Nestlé, PepsiCo Inc., Ralphs, Safeway, Smart & Final Stores, Unified Grocers Inc. and Vons.

Connie Podesta was awesome! Spoke for 2 hours without notes or slides. She hates slides -- says it detracts attention. She also made the case for always wearing a wristwatch instead of constantly checking your phone. Wonderful speaker!
