More than 500 Network of Executive Women members learned to boost their value in the workplace at the NEW Northern California fall networking event at the Blackhawk Museum, Oct. 4, 2013 in Danville.

Executive coach Cy Wakeman offered "Reality-Based Rules of the Workplace,” methods to measure worth and become the type of employee no organization can afford to lose.

Wakeman’s rules: Choose to be happy, ditch the drama, realize one’s actions [not opinions] add value, say ‘yes’ to what’s next and succeed despite extenuating circumstances.

NEW Board member Erby Foster Jr., director of diversity and inclusion for The Clorox Company, urged attendees to support one another to help empower women in their careers. "It starts with the NEW members,” Foster said.

NEW Ambassador Debbie Rookstool, director of learning and leadership development for Safeway Inc., received the NEW North California Regional Leader of the Year Award. She serves as the region’s co-chair, programs.

Attendees left the event with clearer leadership perspectives and positive networking experiences. "[Cy Wakeman] was phenomenal and I definitely agree with her about taking more of a supportive, collaborative role in one’s team and organization,” said Melissa Leebove of Clif Bar & Company.

Shannon Sims of Diageo said she appreciated the opportunity to connect on a personal level with clients outside the regular work day. "It’s also great to network and get to know [people from other companies] better.”

Organizations sending large delegations to the event include Altria, The Coca-Cola Company, Delhaize America, Family Dollar, Kraft Foods Inc., PepsiCo Inc. and Procter & Gamble.
