More than 200 NEW members and supporters were encouraged to re-assess and renew their life and career strategies at the NEW Chicago fall networking event, Oct. 10, 2013 at The Drake Hotel.

"When you walk with purpose, you collide with destiny!” keynote speaker Dr. Bertice Berry, author of I'm On My Way, But Your Foot Is On My Head, told NEW members. "When a person seeks their purpose, the universe conspires to answer.”

Energy management is critical to leadership, Berry noted. "One thing that takes a lot of time and energy is to be something you are not,” she said. "Everybody will not like you, so move on.”

To advance, women must support other women in the workplace, she added. "When you see a woman that rises to the top, support her. We are not each other’s competition, but support.”

One way to support others: Share what you know. "The gap between knowledge and wisdom is the ability to teach someone.”

Berry reminded the crowd that "the only person who can change you is you,” and that a small, but contrary, action can influence your leadership effectiveness. "When you are angry,”Berry said, "smile.”

Organizations sending large delegations to the event include The Coca-Cola Company, Colgate-Palmolive, Hillshire Brands, Kellogg Company, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, Kraft Foods Group Inc., Nielsen, PepsiCo Inc. and Sears Holdings Corporation.
