More than 200 Network of Executive Women members learned to "disrupt the status quo” to spur innovation and advance their careers at the NEW North Central Texas fall networking event, Nov. 2013 at the Crowne Plaza in Addison, Texas.

Whitney Johnson, author of Dare. Dream. Do: Remarkable Things Happen When You Dare to Dream and co-founder of Rose Park Advisors, urged members to disrupt their lives to reach their potential.

"Women are great disruptors,” Johnson said, "[and] companies cannot disrupt unless the people do.”

Women working toward achieving their dreams are disrupting the status quo, she said. "If it feels scary and lonely, you are probably on the right track,” she said.

Taking the right risks in the course of disruption is key. "Don’t think of what your competitors are doing,” Johnson said, "but of what they’re not doing.”

When outcomes fall short of expectations, remember that "some of our biggest accomplishments happened because of one big failure,” Johnson advised.

"The most important measure of success [is] the number of times we show up,” Johnson said, urging the crowd to "never stop showing up!”

Also critical to success: a willingness to learn. "Battle entitlement,” Johnson said. "When satisfied, we are not compelled to innovate. Stay open to ideas from wherever they may come.”

There are always opportunities to learn, she added. "Step back to grow,” Johnson advised. Finding yourself stalled at the top of one learning curve is your cue to "jump to a new curve. Backwards or sidewards can be a slingshot to growth.”

Attendees said they were inspired and empowered by Johnson’s keynote.

"[She] addressed the challenges of daring to dream or start something new with humor — much needed — and gave us the stepping stones to start on the path,” said Katherine McCarthy of Front Porch Marketing.

"Everyone at the luncheon was welcoming,” added Breanna James of National Motor Club. "I met amazing businesswomen. Whitney did a great job of being witty and presenting the information in a way that everyone can relate to.”

The luncheon event also celebrated NEW North Central Texas "Best of the Best” Regional Leader Melody Orrantia of Top Down Consulting and the region’s receiving the Regional Achievement Award for Excellence in Fundraising and Sponsorship at last month’s NEW Leadership Summit.

Companies sending large delegations to the event include CROSSMARK, Deloitte, Dr. Pepper Snapple Group, PepsiCo Inc., Launch Agency and The Kroger Co.
