Nearly 200 Network of Executive Women
members learned leadership lessons from senior retail executives at the NEW Greater Philadelphia
fall networking event, Nov. 6, 2013 at Hershey’s Chocolate World.
Manuel Haro of Ahold US, Cathy Pulos of Wawa Inc. and June Youngs of CVS Caremark Corp.
offered their insights on "Dynamic Leadership in the Evolving Retail
Environment.” The discussion was moderated by NEW Board member at-large Amy
Hahn, vice president and general manager
of The Global Hershey Experience at The Hershey Company.

Making decisions that align with an
organization’s values drives business, the panelists agreed. For example, Wawa’s
decision to offer no-fee ATMs meant passing up significant revenue, but was in
line with the company’s values and "the right thing to do for our customers,” said
Pulos, adding that Wawa encourages team members to ‘innovate with discipline.”
"I love how Wawa leaders are encouraged
to share their failures,” said NEW Greater Philadelphia Secretary Virginia Pigeaire
of Kimberly-Clark Corporation. "That is the greatest way to learn from each
other and grow as an organization. Leaders need to feel supported to take risks
Nicole Calianno of CROSSMARK said the leaders’
discussion "inspired, refreshed and grounded my vision of my future. It was a
priceless evening with like-minded people who were caring and passionate about
making a difference in their career. It is obvious why [NEW] has touched so
many parts on a map and continues to grow in numbers.”
During the evening event, NEW Greater
Philadelphia Treasurer Linda Gilroy of JOH was honored as the region’s 2013 Best
of the Best volunteer.
After dinner and networking, members turned in their name tagsand received
gift bags with items donated by regional sponsors.
"It was wonderful to see how emerging leaders truly did get access to
executives in the industry during all aspects of our event,” said NEW Greater
Philadelphia Co-Chair Logistics Roberta Kitchenoff of Kitchenoff & Associates.
"Opportunities were afforded during both the upfront and concluding
networkingsegments, as well as during thepanel discussion. This is
what the Network is all about!”
