The panelists outlined strategies for securing leadership roles; finding mentors, sponsors and champions; and navigating career-path detours.

The senior executives urged emerging leaders to:

  • Work as though someone is watching, because you may have a sponsor and not know it.
  • Make decisions that are right for you and the important people in your life, rather than "expected” in your professional career.
  • Know that you are expected to participate when invited to a meeting, not just be given information.

"All of the panelists provided real-life examples and stories that personally resonated with me,” said Katie Doyle, manager, client service for MARS Advertising. "One of the quotes that I took away from the discussion was ‘Work to live.’For me that is critical in balancing who I am and being clear about priorities in my work and personal life.”

Also during the event, NEW Twin Cities honored Rebecca Anderson of SUPERVALU with the 2013 "Best of the Best" Award as the region's outstanding committee member.

Organizations sending large delegations to the event included 3M, Acosta Sales & Marketing, Altria, The Coca-Cola Company, General Mills Inc., Kraft Foods Group Inc., MOM Brands, Mondelēz International, Nestlé Group, Procter & Gamble, Schwan’s Consumer Brands Inc., SUPERVALU Inc. and Target Corporation.
