Leaders must be disciplined to stay in shape physically, mentally and spiritually to maintain their integrity, according to retired U.S. Brig. Gen. Becky Halstead, keynote speaker at the NEW Northwest Arkansas fall learning event, Oct. 9 at Embassy Suites in Rogers, Ark.

Halstead shared her perspective shaped by more than 30 years of military and executive career experiences with more than 300 NEW members at the event.
Respecting group dynamics is essential to effective leadership, Halstead added.

"Just say 'thank you'!" she urged, adding that "success is a team sport."

"Look into their eyes 'til you can see their hearts," she urged.

Halstead offered tips for dealing with confrontation:

  • Choose your fights wisely.

  • Pause, think, then respond by framing your response around leadership.

  • Consider the responses: "Interesting you would say that, but I really do know how to lead in this area based on my experience” or "I must be missing something, can we visit about your concerns later?'

"Be yourself," Halstead urged. "It’s how you become an authentic leader.”

The event also celebrated the region's 10th anniversary. Lori Brown of Kimberly-Clark Corporation was honored with the regional Best of the Best award for her outstanding service as co-chair, programs.

Organizations sending large groups to the event include Coty Inc., CROSSMARK, Kellogg Company, Mondelēz International Inc., Nestlé Purina PetCare Company, Procter & Gamble, Tyson Foods Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
