Leaders share 'style' tips at NEW Florida event

More than 360 NEW members learned to find their leadership style at the NEW Florida fall learning event, Nov. 14, 2014 at The Lakeland Center in Lakeland, Fla.

Sherry Harriman, divisional vice president – supply chain, Wal-Mart Stores Inc.; Sue Kelsey, director of wellness and skin health brands US, GlaxoSmithKline; Alison Midili-Smith, vice president of talent organization development, Publix; Karen Milley, vice president of research and development, The J.M. Smucker Company; and Scott Wallace, director of sales, Kellogg Company, shared their insights on authentic leadership. Michele Hanson, CEO of ExecuInsight LLC moderated the discussion.

Authenticity is essential for effective leadership, at any level, and transcends gender, the panelists agreed.

They offered these takeaways:

  • When asked, be willing and prepared to share your perspective.
  • Be self-aware: Take feedback and try to understand it, but don't dwell on it.
  • Remember to round off any "sharp edges" in your style that might distract others from hearing your message.

Organizations sending large groups to the event include Altria, Frito-Lay, Kellogg Company, PepsiCo Inc. and Publix Supermarkets.
