As a leader, "what you do casts a shadow that encompasses other people," Lisa Bisaccia, senior vice president and chief human resources officer for CVS Health, told nearly 400 NEW members participating in the NEW Leadership Academy webinar, Dec. 5, 2014.

Bisaccia joined Roberto Marques, group chairman, consumer North America for Johnson & Johnson, to share perspectives from the top during the one-hour "Ask a C-Suite Executive: What the CXO Wants You to Know" webinar. The discussion was moderated by facilitator Jo Miller, CEO of Women's Leadership Coaching.

Future leaders display three distinct qualities, Bisaccia said: Curiosity, resilience and the ability to identify and develop future talent themselves.

How will you get there?

When considering high-potential talent for advancement, the c-suite execs said business results aren't the only thing that matters. "Results matter, but we're looking for how you got there," Bisaccia said. "Did you bring people with you? Are the results sustainable? Is it a win-win solution?"

"We assess performance based on what you do and how you do it — they are equally important," Marques added, explaining that 'what' is based on the result, while 'how' is based on leadership. "Work with a team. Don't be a hero!"

Asked how to communicate effectively with C-level leaders, Bisaccia said: "Be yourself. Make it a conversation, not a presentation. Build on a foundation of data. Bring team members and make sure they have a speaking role — and be prepared to adjust in-flight."

"Be passionate," Marques advised. "Be prepared. Be flexible. People presenting an idea who are passionate about it can go a long way."

He urged NEW members to seek out diverse experiences and take risks. "Stretch yourself out of your comfort zone! Read everything that you find interesting; even things that you don't find interesting. Be curious."
