Emerging leaders steer their careers at Innovation You

"Everything you have — or don't have — comes from a foundation of your beliefs," leadership consultant Wendy Capland told more than 100 professionals at the second NEW Innovation You webinar, "Get in the Driver's Seat: Career Mapping," March 4, 2015.

To advance their careers, women should treat their beliefs as if they are the truth. "[Beliefs] create our reality," said Capland, author of Your Next Bold Move and CEO of Vision Quest Consulting,

Declaration — actively sharing and recognizing your desires — helps create your next reality, she said. "Be it. Speak it. And then you'll have it. Notice what you're saying to yourself about where you are. What you're saying, even in your own head, is actually what you're creating. Our language creates our reality."

While there are opportunities galore, many women aren't seeing or taking them. "Advocating ourselves, for most of us, is a new muscle. It's not always comfortable," Capland explained, urging women not to wait to be tapped for promotions. "Women often wait, while men think, 'It's about time they picked me.'"

Still, self-monitoring and political savvy are essential, she added. "We have to be really careful with what we say out loud," Capland said, urging listeners not to share dissatisfaction with others at work, despite any close personal relationships. "I've had best friends have to fire best friends when going through mergers and acquisitions, or a reorg.

"If you're not at a career crossroads, you will be. That's the nature of 'career.'"

The NEW Innovation You learning series led by popular career experts continues with "Reinventing You" on March 18, 2015. The series is free to NEW members. Non-members may view webinars for $99 each. Learn more about Innovation You webinars.
