"The team is only as good as you," retired Brig. Gen. Becky Halstead told more than 450 NEW members at the NEW Northern California spring learning event, May 15, 2015 at Blackhawk Museum in Danville.

Halstead, the founder of STEADFAST Leadership LLC and author of 24/7: The First Person You Must Lead is You, shared life and career lessons gained from 27 years of service in the U.S. Army and more than 15 years in executive-level leadership roles.

The first female in U.S. history to command in combat at the strategic level, Halstead shared the importance of teamwork for leadership success. "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together."

Strength and encouragement are leadership essentials, Halstead said. "As a leader you need to be capable of giving a kick in the butt and a pat on the back. They are only 8 inches apart."

Take careful inventory of assets and resources. "Are you getting what you want or getting what you asked for?" Halstead asked, adding "there is a difference."

Ultimately, leadership is "not just about being successful," Halstead reminded the crowd. "It's about being significant."

Companies sending large delegations to the event include Annie's Inc., Big Heart Pet Brands, Chevron Corporation, E.&J. Gallo Winery, Frito-Lay, Procter & Gamble, Ross Stores Inc., Safeway, The Clorox Company and Wal-Mart Stores Inc.
