"Have the confidence, courage and agility to go after lofty goals," Colleen Flaherty, vice president and general manager, Kroger Team for Kraft Foods, urged nearly 200 emerging leaders attending "Delivering Real Results," the NEW Leadership Academy webinar, June 5, 2015.

Flaherty; Kevin Arceneaux, region vice president, Pacific Coast Region for Mondelēz International; and session leader Jo Miller, CEO of Women's Leadership Coaching Inc., shared strategies for increasing visibility at work while producing results that boost the bottom line.

The industry executives emphasized the importance of staying on top of your company's goals. "It's our responsibility to be clear on expectations. Have an open, candid relationship with your leader," Arceneaux advised. "Pay attention to what the leader of the company is focused on. Keep track of your personal results."

Results-oriented people need to answer three questions, he said: "What's expected of me?" "How am I doing?" and "What can I do to improve?"

Understanding what defines an optimal result is key, Flathery said. "Even if you know what 'great' is, you need to make sure that definition is aligned with your leader's."

Delivering on a lofty goal provides instant credibility and exposure within your organization, she said. "Don't say, 'No one can get that done.' Instead, think 'I'm the one!' Do everything in your power to show, while you may not get it done, you exhausted every option to try. There is always a way."

As your responsibilities grow, "be coachable and open to learning new things from your leader," Arceneaux said, adding that it's critical to "show improvement in areas of concern."

As careers progress, the nature of visibility and goals can change. "Earlier in your career, it's about your performance," Flaherty noted. "Later, it becomes more about your influence and your experience."
