500 take intelligent risks at Northwest Arkansas event

Nearly 500 executives and emerging leaders learned about intelligent risk-taking at the annual NEW Northwest Arkansas LPGA Breakfast Event celebrating Women's Day, June 25, 2015 at John Q. Hammons Center in Rogers, Ark.

Guest panelists Laura Desmond, CEO, Starcom MediaVest Group; Kim Underhill, global president, Kimberly-Clark; and Latriece Watkins, senior vice president, merchandising for Walmart offered their insights on personal and professional empowerment during "Taking Intelligent Risks: Learning as Much from Failure as Success."

Taking intelligent risks requires authenticity, the willingness to learn and keeping your head up when facing failure, the panelists said.

"Did you learn something?" Desmond asked. "Then it’s not a complete failure. Move yourself forward and don’t make that mistake twice. Now you’ve propelled yourself. You’re more resilient and on your way.”

Other key takeaways include:

  • It's okay to fail, if you fail forward
  • You can't hit a homerun if you do not swing
  • Go outside of your comfort zone — stretch yourself
