"Change is an emotional and behavioral journey," Lisa Badgley, vice president of pharmacy and retail operations for Walgreen Company, told 200 NEW Leadership Academy participants. "And the 'behavioral' is the hardest part."

Badgley joined Srishti Gupta, president and general manager, media for IRI, and session leader Jo Miller, president and CEO of Women's Leadership Coaching, to share insights on changing organizational systems, teams and attitudes for "Leading Change," August 7, 2015.

Gupta urged NEW members to focus on "unlearning" traditional mindsets by embracing reverse mentorship, nurturing a culture of growth and change, demonstrating thought leadership through social media and celebrating risks. "I'm a big believer in 'actions speak louder than words,'" she said.

To drive change effectively, 'you can never communicate 'too much,'" Gupta added. Champions for change keep energy up and reemphasize the "why" for change.

"Being proactive in communication is one of the biggest pieces in leading the change," Badgley agreed. Leaders must not only give a high-level timeline for change, but communicate updates frequently.

If your team is struggling through change, help members upgrade their skill set, Gupta advised. "Preparing the team for the future will help to put them in control."

Added Badgely: "Help your team see the full vision of where you want to go and what you want to accomplish.Own and be the face of change," Badgley said. "Don't push it off as a 'corporate initiative.'"

Leaders need to recognize change as an industry-wide – and worldwide – phenomenon. "We are moving to a much more analytical workforce," Gupta observed. "Traditional organizational models are being disrupted.

"We all need to be lifelong learners. The water's changing really fast."

NEW members may register online for the next NEW Leadership Academy webinar "Giving and Receiving Feedback," September 4 at 1 p.m. ET, for free. Non-members may view webinars for $99 per session. Members may view previous NEW Leadership Academy webinars in the NEW Study Hall.
