"Success is a team effort," retired U.S. Army Brigadier General Becky Halstead told more than 100 industry professionals at the NEW North Texas fall learning event, Nov. 10, 2015 at Addison Conference Centre. The occasion also marked the region's 10-year anniversary.

Halstead, founder of STEADFAST Leadership, stressed the value of diversity and integrity in team members and their leaders. By leading ourselves to be better people we become better bosses and better teammates, she said. "It all starts with you. Leadership is a choice. Lead yourself!"

Effective leaders question the status quo and dig deep for answers. Grabbing an example from her own experience, she said, the amount of critical fuel supplies available for battle may appear sufficient, but the fuel may not be distributed in the right places in the right amount. "Ask for the information beyond the numbers," she advised.

The most successful leaders cultivate a sense of purpose, she said. "Make a difference. Leave a legacy," Halstead urged NEW members. When she retired from the military, she "left on a high and felt empowered and ready to make a difference."

It's Time to celebrate

The region celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a slide show highlighting its industry and outreach events and leadership lessons learned along the way.

NEW North Texas Co-Chair, Programming Carrie Wilson of Mass Mutual Financial Group was honored with the region's Best of the Best award for her exceptional service.

"There are so many teams of people working on the NEW mission – and such great women, all of you," Wilson told the crowd. "I am grateful for the warmth and friendship you have offered to me along the way.Thank you for the opportunity to join you."

Companies sending large delegations to the event include Altria, CROSSMARK, Frito-Lay, PepsiCo Inc., Tetra Pak USA and The Kroger Co.
