Equal Pay Day shines spotlight on gender pay gap

NEW marked Equal Pay Day April 4 with a social media surge highlighting the wage gap between men and women in U.S. business.

Equal Pay Day symbolizes how far into the year women must work to earn what men earned in the previous year. The date varies by country and year, depending on the size of the wage gap. According to the United Nations, it will take 70 years for the gender pay gap to close at current rates.

In addition to institutional and societal bias, a chief culprit in the gender gap is “the motherhood penalty,” experts say. Women who have children can expect to earn less when they return to work than childless women, with the difference increasing for every child they have, according to the International Labor Organization. By contrast, men who have children see their salaries increase, according to a study by the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

NEW and its 10,000 members, 105 corporate partners and 20 regions are working to close the pay gay in the retail and consumer goods industry through education, advocacy, best practices and career development opportunities.
