Nearly 300 Network of Executive Women Carolinas members and supporters received frank advice from a panel of male industry leaders at the NEW Carolinas fall networking event Oct. 19, 2011 at the Great Wolf Lodge in Concord, N.C.

Pete Bonneau, vice president, center store for Delhaize America; Mike Mabry Jr., executive vice president of logistics and distribution, Lowes Cos. Inc.; H. Joseph Machicote, vice president of organizational development for Snyder’s-Lance Inc. ; and Gary Scott, vice president/general manager, EMEA Home and Family Group for Newell Rubbermaid Europe, gave their perspectives on women in leadership roles during a panel discussion moderated by author Fawn Germer.

"The panelists’ main message was ‘Take charge of yourself through a sense of responsibility and self-esteem, support each other and be open to others,’” said Erin Holland, senior national account executive, specialty channels, Kellogg Co. "They didn’t sugarcoat the fact there are barriers to the upper echelons of management. They all agreed there isn’t a large enough pool of women to pick from and that corporations need to manage differently, including, for instance, not punishing women for taking time out of the workforce to have families, but having a plan to re-integrate them.”

Added Donna Adam, senior manager, contracted sales for Kellogg Co.: "I am thankful that Kellogg provides me the opportunity to work with such an incredible organization in NEW, and the amazing regional committee here in Charlotte. NEW re-energizes me, offers developmental programs, fosters strong business relationships and has helped me build a far-reaching, extensive network of industry professionals -- many of whom I also count as friends.”

During the event, Adam and other NEW Carolinas members recalled the best career advice they ever received; the video is available for viewing on YouTube.
