NEW Pacific Northwest focuses on career and life choices

Eighty-five Network of Executive Women members and supporters learned to make the right choices for their lives and careers at the NEW Pacific Northwest spring luncheon, April 19, 2012 at the Harbor Club in Seattle.
Dr. Natalie Ellington, author of Right Choices: Choose the Life You Were Destined to Live, shared her personal story and offered insights on making choices to achieve leadership potential.
Ellington described herself as an ambitious, bold woman, who invited the Temptations to perform at her birthday party and who put her career first, often skipping vacations, until a stroke "forced” her into the hospital.
After her keynote, Ellington was interviewed by Ginnie Roeglin, senior vice president e-commerce and publishing for Costco Wholesale Corporation, who also shared her career experiences. Roeglin advised NEW members to "find a company and position that fit your moral compass.”
Roeglin has been fortunate to work for Costco, she said, because the company has allowed her to balance her career with family life, which she called "without a doubt my greatest accomplishment.” The industry executive recalled how she took a career break after each of her two daughters were born, but returned to work, filling positions that were interesting and fit her career ambitions.
"Don’t just work very hard and expect to be noticed,” she advised. "Take ownership of your career and make sure you put a plan in place.”
Roeglin’s advice to let go of the guilt associated with raising a family and succeeding in a career resonated with Michelle Lindners Wagner, senior manager for Deloitte. "She is the type of role model that helps demonstrate that the kids will fare fine when all is said and done,” Wagner said.
Among the companies sending delegations to the NEW Pacific Northwest event were Acosta Sales & Marketing, The Clorox Company, Coca-Cola Refreshments, Continental Mills Inc., Costco, Deloitte, Safeway Inc., Portland State University and Starbucks Coffee Co.
