Network of Executive Women title sponsor The Clorox Company has received the 2012 Ascend ERG Leadership Award in recognition of its Asian ERG. Ascend, a nonprofit association dedicated to advancing the leadership potential of Pan-Asians in global business, honored the CPG company at its national convention July 30, 2012 in Chicago.

Two years ago, Clorox CEO Don Knauss challenged the company’s Asian ERG tothink about ways to better connect Clorox with Asian consumers to help drive business results. Based on research, store visits and surveys, the ERG identified Asian sauces and marinades as a potential focus for a strategic acquisition. This work was the business foundation that led to the acquisition of Soy Vay, a company that makes kosher Asian sauces, in December 2011, according to Erby Foster, director of diversity and inclusion for The Clorox Company.

Striving to make a change in Clorox’s business, the Asian ERG holds a semi-annual event called IdeAsian for employees to brainstorm business opportunities and share cultural insights and marketing trends specific to the Asian consumer. Clorox’s internal Asian focus group is used by business units for testing product and marketing ideas.

"Business connectivity is now a formal part of the company’s diversity strategy and cascades to all of Clorox’s ERGs,” Foster said. "Soy Vay is a great example of how ERGs can be tapped to drive value, even competitive advantage.”

The Clorox Company’s Asian employee resource group provided feedback that was instrumental in the company’s decision to acquire Soy Vay.
