NEW CEO Alter advocates 'the power of us'

“The team work you’ve shown here proves how strong the 'power of us' can be,” NEW President and CEO Sarah Alter told more than 300 senior-level executives at NEW Executive Leaders Forum, August 3, 2017 in Santa Barbara.

Alter continued with the question: “How can we keep the spirit of the past two days alive when we get home?”

After sharing a brief re-cap of the three-day Forum’s events, including explorations of future trends in talent and technology and learning from keynote speakers including former U.S. Secretary Condoleezza Rice, Alter emphasized the need for all in the room to advance gender equality.

“And I include everyone in this challenge, including our male champions,” Alter said.

Tips for NEW members to advocate for gender equality include:

Challenge assumptions. “Just because you’ve always done it a certain way doesn’t mean it’s the best way, and it certainly doesn’t guarantee the parity we need," she said. "We need new approaches.”

Hold yourself and others accountable. “A future without limits for women and all diverse employees will take more than talk.," alter said. "Set goals and monitor them.”

Demystify sponsorship “Use your capital to benefit other women, help women understand what it takes to be sponsor-worthy, and guide them when you can.”

Be active in your company’s affinity groups. “Whether you identify with the group or not, it’s a great place to learn and teach,” she noted.

Share what you’ve learned throughout your organization. Visit for session write-ups, photos and videos.

Use NEW to connect with other advocates for gender equality. “Join our NEW member community online and use NEW social media," Alter advised." Participate in our learning programs and events. Nominate high-potential leaders for our 2018 NEW Executive Institute and NEW Rising Stars learning programs."

Attend NEW Leadership Summit. NEW partner companies can send their teams to the upcoming NEW Leadership Summit, September 27 - 29 in Washington, D.C. Register by August 9 to save $300. Details and registration at

“I know what some of you are thinking,” Alter said. “I don’t have time to do half of what I’m doing now. But as Lucille Ball once said, ‘If you want something done, ask a busy person.'”
