More than a dozen women executives in the retail and consumer goods industry convened in Amsterdam Feb. 14-19 for the first international session of the NEW Executive Institute. The NEW Executive Institute’s second onsite session was sponsored by Procter & Gamble and Ahold, which hosted the Institute at its world headquarters in Zaandam.
NEW Executive Institute participants engaged in experiential learning exercises, received insights into their emotional intelligence and conflict styles and learned leadership lessons from senior executives. Topics covered during the five-day session included cultural competency, conflict, authentic leadership and leading with power and influence.
Speakers included Abbe Luersman and Hanneke Faber of Ahold, Anna Bizon of Heineken, Geraldine Huse of Procter & Gamble, Ciara Desmond of LinkedIn and NEW Secretary Regenia Stein of Ingenuity Consulting. Dymfke Kuijpers of McKinsey & Co. shared results of the firm's "Women Matter” study.
NEW Board member Dorria Ball welcomed the group at a day-one luncheon at Instock, an Ahold concept restaurant that serves gourmet dishes made from overstocked products and other ingredients that would otherwise go to waste. Later, Ahold President and CEO Dick Boer addressed attendees during an executive dinner. Other networking events included a guided tour of local Albert Heijn, ETOS and Gall and Gall stores; a river cruise through historic Amsterdam; and a dinner hosted by Heineken after a tour of the Heineken Experience.
Several Ahold executives supported the event, including former NEW Board Member Sarah Chartrand, senior vice president, human resources for Ahold USA; Subarna Malakar, Ahold’s global vice president for diversity and inclusion; and Vera van Vilsteren, people development consultant for Ahold
The inaugural program NEW Executive Institute, which participants have described as “transformational,” will conclude in Chicago in May. Nominations for the 2017 NEW Executive Institute will be accepted this fall.
