NEW Rising Stars find their power in Minneapolis

More than 100 emerging leaders from 40 companies strengthened their leadership skills at the NEW Rising Stars career development on-site, June 20-22 in Minneapolis.

Participants increased their self-awareness of their job-related strengths and areas for development by analyzing results of 360 assessments; learned from senior executives in the retail and consumer goods industry, including Cindy Kent, president and general manager of 3M’s infection prevention division; and grew their professional networks. The program was facilitated by Dr. Ancella B. Livers senior faculty for Center for Creative Leadership.

During one exercise, NEW Rising Stars attendees gained a better understanding of who they are at their best, identified communication pitfalls and learned strategies for relaying the skills and talents they bring to the table.

Panelists Kelly Caruso, president of Target Sourcing Services at Target Corporation; Kathy Persian, CIO for Schwan’s Company; Ellen Siebenborn-Forsyth, vice president of sales for General Mills; and Kathy Weitmann, director of continuous improvement at Land O’Lakes, offered their advice for “Pursuing Your Passion and Power.”

Among their insights:

  • “Stop worrying,” Persian said. “Transform your minutes of worry into positive impact."
  • “Challenge your assumption and reconsider ideas that you automatically dismiss,” Siebenborn-Forsyth advised.
  • “Speak up,” Caruso said. “Don’t wait to be asked — share and challenge others!”
  • “Power is when you can deliver value,” Weitmann added.

In her keynote address, 3M’s Kent laid out research findings on gender bias and inequality in the workplace:

  • Replacing a woman’s name on a resume with a man’s can increase her “worthiness of hire” by 60 percent.
  • Men apply for jobs when they meet 60 percent of the criteria, while women wait until they meet 100 percent.
  • Success and likability are positively correlated for men but negatively correlated for women.
  • Women negotiate and advocate for others, but not themselves.

The NEW Rising Stars 2017 program continues through October with two interactive webinars featuring industry leaders sharing their career experiences and two one-on-one coaching sessions. Registration for NEW Rising Stars 2018 will open this summer.
